making
Ceramics is my primary making discipline, and my home studio has been Teachers College Ceramics Studio in New York City. My ceramics projects revolve around the relation between humans, books, and the natural world.
My latest series of pieces, Texts from the Future, is a set of ruined books recovered from an imagined, far-future, off-planet library. I think of these pieces as 'design fiction' - objects from imaginary futures that are intended to provoke creative conversations.
Several pieces from the series appeared in a group exhibition at the Macy Gallery, in NYC, in early 2024: the virtual exhibition tour (selected pieces) is here and images of a larger subset of the pieces are here. The artist statement is here.
I'm also interested in using AI image generation for environmental and social commentary: exploring what AI systems interpret in clashes between different ecological visions of the future (dystopian/utopian) and solarpunk/retrofuturistic visions of alternative futures and pasts.
